Bye Bye Belly!

The other day I was rooting around in the kitchen at work for some tea when I came across "diet tea". Not so wonderful memories of trying the diet tea my mom had around when I was a teenager came back to me so I knew to steer clear of it unless I was experiencing some, uh, congestion down below. (If you know what I mean.) It really got me thinking about diets in general and what I can do to bring my weight back down.

This last summer I developed a lot of weight around my midsection due to a combination of leaving a physically active job and drinking alcohol. I've never been a regular consumer of alcohol, so the weight gain was somewhat of a surprise.

After lying to myself about how hard I have been trying to lose weight I decided I need to make some permanent changes. My rules for myself?

  • No soda at all
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Black tea with stevia
  • Lean protein at least three times a day if not more usually from nuts or fish
  • Healthy dairy like yogurt or cheese 2-3 times a day
  • Add leafy greens and other colorful vegetables to every meal
  • WAY less sugar (hopefully no processed sugar once I get used to this)
  • Watch my sodium intake carefully
  • Alcohol only in strict moderation when out with friends (2 drinks max)
  • Movement throughout the day which usually consists of lunges/squats at my desk and stretching of my arms/shoulders/neck

A colorful diet is a healthy diet! (Source: coreperformance.com)
My goal right now is to lose 20 pounds by my birthday the first week of March. I'm fairly certain I can do it since I am not trying to make major changes. Just adjustments to healthier food options and exercise. I am NOT counting calories though. I am NOT eating diet food. I am NOT going on a diet. I'm making changes TO my diet which I will continue for the rest of my life.

And please note, I am in no way a health professional! This is what works for me and should not substitute for actual medical advice or treatment. :)
