Music Monday! (3/31)

I'm reliving my youth again with this Crowded House tune. Love it, love it, love it. You know there is something right with a song when you can still love it 20+ years after hearing it the first time. Crowded House, Don't Dream It's Over from their self titled album released in 1986.

There is freedom within
there is freedom without
Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car
there's a hole in the roof
my possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today
tales of war and of waste
but you turn right over to the T.V. page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm walking again
to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, Hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, Hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win

Don't let them win
Hey now, Hey now

Hey now, Hey now

Hey now, Hey now
Don't let them win

They come, They come
Don't let them win

Hey now, Hey now (yeah)

Hey now, Hey now

Where I've Been

I have not kept up on my daily posts because my mind has been elsewhere. Last Saturday there was a horrific mudslide just 50 miles from where I live. There were many people caught in this landslide, few of them survived and only a portion of the missing have been recovered. Today, I drove donations and supplies to the town of Oso where rescue/recovery teams are and many of the affected are going for relief. It was hard thinking about the people who lost their lives just up around the corner from where we were.

I've been spending a little more time with Jim and just enjoying having a house and my family. Ryan will probably go volunteer in the recovery effort and I hope that he is safe while working. There is still the danger of the dam breaking or another landslide. It is very hard mentally to be this close to something of this magnitude. It is going to affect the communities and families in this area for a very long time.

Wisdom Wednesday (3/26)

Written By Regina Brett of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. If you think this system will go that long.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. Our brothers and sisters are the family that we choose for ourselves.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful or God wouldn't approve of.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles, only according to God's will.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you do or don't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood, let them have it.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved, and more importantly your standing with your Creator.

39. Get outside every day. God's awesome creation is waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Treat Yourself Tuesday! (3/25)

This week on Treat Yourself Tuesday I am featuring a great little party food. Bacon wrapped lil' smokies coated in brown sugar. I brought these to a Super Bowl party this year and everyone raved about them. I have a get together to go to next Friday and when I mentioned making these I got many proclamations of joy. :D

Ingredients

1 pound bacon
1 (16 ounce) package little smokie sausages
1 cup brown sugar, or to taste

Directions

1.  Cut bacon into thirds and wrap each strip around a little sausage. Stick a toothpick through each wrapped smokie to hold the bacon in place.

2.  Place sausages in baking dish and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

3.  The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

4.  Arrange sausages in a single layer on a foil covered baking sheet and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the bacon is crisp and the sugar has melted.

These are just as good cooled off as they are warm so they are great for taking to a party or picnic! Enjoy!!

Friday Funday! (3/21)

I've decided Fridays will be dedicated to something fun! It will usually be something fitness related because staying in shape and being healthy should be FUN to do and should not be dreaded.

I have been a big The Oatmeal fan for a couple years. Its a really fun site with comics, quizzes and stories that will have you rolling. Matthew Inman, who lives in Seattle, is the mad man behind The Oatmeal. He enjoys running and is going to be having a 'Beat the Blerch' 10k/Half/Full Marathon! Due to my back issues I can't expect to run, but I can walk it! It will be on September 1st in Carnation, WA.

In August I plan to run with a group in the Color Run in Tacoma. Right now I am no where near healthy enough to even walk a 5k, but I am hoping that having a date and goal in mind will help move my treatment along. (Just FYI, I fell 3 years ago roller skating at my older son's birthday party and injured my right sacroiliac joint. I have had continuous pain and dysfunction since and am waiting on insurance to approve steroid injections, with the eventual plan of nerve ablation - destroying the nerves so I don't have pain.)

Stitch Fix Review! (March 2014)

Disclaimer: This blog post contains referral links.

I just signed up for Stitch Fix recently and decided to relay my experience so far! What is Stitch Fix? Here's the description from their site: Stitch Fix is a personal styling service. You tell us your style, size, and budget preferences, and we send you a package of stylish goodies to try on at home. Each Fix™ is unique and hand-picked just for you.

I am terrible at shopping for myself, especially when it comes to new things so this is great for me. I get to try new things and at the very least I figure there is going to be at least one thing I will want to keep. (Plus, with this first fix I got a $20 credit to try it out so what do I have to lose?!)

My first fix is great. Very true to my style and what I want to try. Sizes are also perfect for me. They sent me mediums for all the tops and a size 8 pant which fit perfect. Shipping was fast. The package actually arrived a day early. Packaging was standard. I thought the box was too small at first, but the clothes all fit nicely inside. They insert a cute little letter and package everything in tissue paper. (It felt like Christmas!)

This first item is a Pomelo Cambridge Metal Cuff Bracelet in silver. I like that its silver but its too bulky for me. I have extremely slender wrists so I prefer much smaller jewelry or something that is tight-fitting. This was rolling all over my wrist. Price: $28. Sending Back.

The next item is the Cellar Open Front Drape Cardigan by Sweet Rain. The color is a nice burgundy and very much me. Its pretty and I love the collar, but it has 3/4 sleeves. I really do not like 3/4 sleeves AT ALL. Something about them just really bugs me. Price: $48. Sending back.

Underneath the cardigan I have on Laila Jayde's Jaspers Split Neck Knit Shirt. I love the long sleeve length but dislike how thin the material is. I like my shirt material to be a little more on the substantial side. Otherwise, its gorgeous! Price: $68. Sending it back.

Then I got a Haines Striped Dolman Sleeve Top by Ezra. I really like the way this fits and feels. It will be great for spring since its meshy and airy. The colors are nice. It is more purple than the photos show. Price: $48. Keeping it!

Finally are the Kensie Jeans Kaleigh Ankle Biter Skinny Jeans. These fit great and if it weren't for my tight budget at the moment and the price I would SO buy these. The color is perfect for this Spring and I like the fit a lot. The material is very soft and stretchy. I will have to find these somewhere else or a good dupe! Price: $88. Sending back. =(

Here's what they send to break down the prices. If I purchased everything in my fix I would end up spending $195 after the $20 styling fee and 20% discount (-$65) are deducted.

They also send styling cards with suggestions on how to style the pieces they sent you!

If I were still working and had a clothing budget I would definitely buy more of what was in my fix. I loved most of what they sent me and this was my first fix! I can give them feedback and next time it should (I hope) be even better.

I will be doing these regularly. The $20 styling fee is non-refundable but it goes towards any item you choose to purchase from your fix. From what I see of this first experience, it will be worth it!

Jim is 11 months old today! (Themeless Thursdays! 3/20)

This blog post is going to be dedicated to my little man, Jim!

Jim is 11 months old today. He can wave hello. He says dada, hey and yeah. He cruises the furniture like a pro and will stand by himself with no support for several seconds at a time. Walking is not far off!
He's also climbing. We had to rearrange the furniture to keep him from getting into things he's not supposed to. The cats are now thoroughly terrified of him!

Jim likes every kind of food! There isn't anything we have found that he will not eat (including carpet fuzz! ew!). He eats a lot, too. He gets just 1-2 bottles a day now but eats 3 meals a day and gets 2 snacks. He is getting mostly "toddler" food at this point, is feeding himself finger foods at most meals and drinks water from a sippy cup.

Jim gets 2-3 naps a day and sleeps about 12 hours at night. He is approximately 31 inches tall and weighs around 25 pounds. He is a big, big boy!

Next month we will be celebrating his 1st birthday! Seems like just yesterday I was bringing my little squishface home. Love you little man!

Wisdom Wednesday (3/19), Truth

Try to remain truthful. The power of truth never declines. Force and violence may be effective in the short term, but in the long run it’s truth that prevails. Being honest and truthful engenders trust and trust leads to friendship and a good reputation. Because we all need friends, honesty and transparency are a basic aspect of human nature.

Music Monday!

Every Monday I will post a new track that I've been jammin' to recently. Should be a cool way for me to be able to look back and see what I was listening to! I'm crushin hard on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories album. Everyone has probably heard the more popular tracks so I would like to share one that I don't think has gotten any airplay at all. It starts off sounding like a soundtrack to a movie, but quickly changes into a funky bass driven introspective track. The message is beautiful. (Lyrics below video.)

Artist: Daft Punk
Track: Beyond
Album: Random Access Memories

Dream,
Beyond dreams
Beyond life, you will find, your song
Before sound, to be found, close your eyes
And rise, higher still, endless thrill
To the land of love
Beyond love
Come alive
Angel eye
Forever watching you and I

You are the night, you are the ocean
You are the light behind the cloud
You are the end and the beginning
A world where time is not allowed

There's no such thing as competition
To find our way we lose control
Remember – love's our only mission
This is the journey of the soul

The perfect song is framed with silence
It speaks of places never seen
Your home's a promise long forgotten
It is the birthplace of your dreams

Ipsy March Glam Bag

I subscribed to Ipsy right at the end of February & got off the wait list by referring someone. I was so happy that I got Ipsy's March Glam Bag. The products I received for the $10/month subscription fee were worth well over $10. The nail polish alone would have been nearly that much!

If you aren't familiar with Ipsy, its a subscription service that sends you 5 beauty products tailored to your likes with a quiz they give each member when they sign up. This month there were several products available and I received perfect ones for me.

I got Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer, Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie lipstick in 'Get Ready', Be A Bombshell 'Bora Bora' eyeshadow & Nicole by O.P.I. nail polish in 'On What Grounds'.

I'm so-so about the primer. It is tinted and has a slight shimmer to it. I like my baby skin primer better though. :) I love the lipstick and the nail polish. And the eyeshadow is nicely pigmented and the colors are different than anything I have right now.

Here's the "look" I did with what I got in my Glam Bag. The eye shadow came out nicely. I used the gold color all over, copper in the crease, the turquoise on the inner crease and a little of the brown on the outer crease.

I really like this color lipstick on me. When I first took it out of the package I didn't think I would but I was nicely surprised.

And this is exactly why I signed up for Ipsy, to discover makeup that I might not normally buy for myself.

I would encourage anyone with the extra $10/month to sign up for Ipsy. It is worth the money and fun to discover new products!

Here Kitty Kitty!

Bravery (A Small Confession)

Over the years I have heard how brave I am for the way I dress or do my hair. In high school I had a 6-inch high (sometimes green or pink) mohawk. None of this faux crap either. It was a full hawk with the sides of my head shaved all the way down.

I rocked it. But you know what? I didn't feel brave or super confident. I was SO insecure. Being outlandish and different is my way of hiding. I felt like there was no way I could possibly compete with the "pretty" girls. I had been teased during my childhood for being nerdy and flat-chested. It haunted me for the longest time...

Then being a geeky girl became cool. Wow. Awesome. One woman in particular, Felicia Day, has been a huge inspiration for me. We are the same age and had similar childhoods. I got to meet her and I wish I had had more time to express my gratitude for helping me come out of my shell. Maybe one day, at another con...

So...
I've never been brave! I've been weird because I feel like I suck at being normal!

Spring 2014 Pastel Floral

So I hear that pastels and florals are gonna be all over the place this Spring! I love this look.

Spring 2014 Pastel Floral

Slow Cooker Pot Roast

I love slow cooker meals. Jim is a morning baby. He starts to get fussy around 2pm and then doesn't really stop until bedtime. He has always been this way. Really super needy right around the time I need to be cooking dinner for everyone else. My solution was finding slow cooker meals that I can prep and make ahead of time. I found this one on allrecipes.com (my favorite place for recipes).

Its 11am and I already have dinner going and Jim is taking a nap. Oh bliss. Tonight we are having slow cooker pot roast. The combination of seasoning packets sounds really strange, but it really is good. I add more potatoes to the recipes because I gotta have potatoes with my meat. You can make gravy with the drippings.

They way I make gravy is I just use a little bit of the drippings in a small pan and whisk in some flour until it is a paste, I cook that over med-low heat for just a little bit and then add some more drippings and some broth or water if I have no broth until its a gravy consistency. I may or may not add salt & pepper if it needs it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Onion, sliced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 (2 1/2 pound) boneless beef chuck roast
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 (1.2 ounce) package dry beef gravy mix
  • 1 (1 ounce) package ranch dressing mix
  • 1 (.7 ounce) package dry Italian-style salad dressing mix
  • 1/2 cup water, or as needed
  • 5 peeled carrots
  • 6-7 small potatoes washed and halved

Directions:

  1. Spray the inside of a slow cooker with cooking spray. Spread the onion slices out into the bottom of the cooker.

  2. Spread the flour out onto a work surface. Sprinkle the chuck roast with salt and black pepper, and roll the roast in the flour to coat all sides. Using the edge of a small, sturdy plate, pound the flour into the meat. Place the floured roast into the cooker on top of the onions. Whisk together beef gravy mix, ranch dressing mix, and Italian dressing mix in a bowl, and whisk the mixes with water until smooth. Pour over the chuck roast. Distribute carrots around the meat.

  3. Cover the cooker, set to Low, and cook until the roast is tender and the gravy has thickened, about 8 hours.

I don't have a finished pic yet cause its still cooking! It turns out great, trust me. ;)

Chicken Fiesta Salad

I have been making dinner for around 16-17 years as a mom/wife. After so long making the same handful of dinners gets intensely boring as any mom knows. I was looking for something different on allrecipes.com's Dinner Spinner app. (I linked the Android version since that's what I have...) You pick the type of dish, ingredient and time you want to spend cooking and it finds you recipes that fit your chosen variables.

I put in main dish, chicken and 45 minutes or less. Chicken Fiesta Salad came up. Sounded good. I looked at the recipe and it actually looked doable. I grabbed all the stuff I needed from the store and got home to cook. It was as easy to make and turned out incredible! This is going to be a new regular dinner in my house.

I changed it slightly because I do not like raw onions much and added some additional details. I hope you like this as much as Ryan and I did. Ryan ate two big platefuls of it! :)

Ingredients:

  • 2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
  • 1 (1.27 ounce) packet dry fajita seasoning, divided
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (11 ounce) can Baja/Mexican style corn
  • 1/2 cup salsa (I love Herdez)
  • 1 (10 ounce) package mixed salad greens (I used Romaine Hearts)
  • 1/2 onion, diced (I used yellow onion)
  • 1 tomato, diced (Make sure you get a meaty tomato or little cherry tomatoes)

Directions

  1. Rub chicken evenly with 1/2 the fajita seasoning. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat, and cook the chicken 8 minutes on each side, or until juices run clear; set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, mix beans, corn, salsa and other 1/2 of fajita seasoning. Heat over medium heat until warm.
  3. Prepare the salad by tossing the greens, onion and tomato. Top salad with chicken and dress with the bean and corn mixture. (Optional: top with cheese or tortilla chips).

Patience

The practice of patience protects us from losing our composure. In doing that it enables us to exercise discernment, even in the heat of difficult situations. It gives us inner space. And within that space we gain a degree of self-control, which allows us to respond to situations in an appropriate and compassionate manner rather than being driven by our anger and irritation.
