Bye Felicia

Sometimes people remove themselves from your life and then you realize you aren't missing much. This happened recently with me. It is hard for me to make friends and it has been really hard since splitting up with my husband four years ago. A lot of "our" friends became his friends only. I accepted this because if they wanted to believe his trash talk then I was better off without them.

So, I tried making friends. I found Facebook groups and started helping manage one of them with some other women. We became friends. There have been hair flips and drama galore but some of us have stayed true friends.

I have never been much of a social person but I figured why not invite people over for some get togethers and for kids parties. One person in particular just kept blowing me off time after time. I came to her events and whatnot, but she never showed for mine. It was really insulting. I got really upset a couple months ago after it happening for around the fifth or sixth time and decided not to invite anyone over for awhile.

I'm not one to beat around the bush or mince words. I'm also not entirely tactful. I will admit this. I also tell everyone this and ask them to let me know if I'm coming across harshly.

Recently this girl that always stood me up got a house bought for her by her parents. Cool. My in-laws bought me a house several years ago so I know all the strings that come attached with a deal like that. I wasn't openly voicing my opinion of the situation because it wasn't a nice one. In my eyes I had seen this couple not do anything to help themselves get their own place. In the two years of not paying rent they maybe, possibly could have paid on some old bills and gotten themselves in a position to where they could rent. I don't know full details but I know enough... She mistook my annoyance for jealousy.

So when I brought up (in a small group chat of four of us) that I was hurt because of people blowing me off she started apologizing. I wasn't referring to just her but apparently she felt guilty enough to apologize. Then she gets all hurt by my expressing my feelings, removes me from her friends list AND blocks me. Total overreaction...

Then my fiance (who was still friends with her) tells me he saw a status about the whole friendship ending and that her and at least one of her friends were talking about how I was jealous. Nope. Not jealous. I was sick of feeling like I was there to pad her guest and friend list. I don't let people in easily and she totally took my friendship for granted. Then when I'm not totally happy that she sat around on her ass and then complained about her situation, she unfriends me? She needs to take a look in the mirror and figure out why she got so angry with me because I only said what everyone else who knows the whole story is thinking.

As far as jealously in general goes... I do see things I want. I also know what I have to do to achieve it. If I haven't done the work then I am not going to be jealous. I know there are ups and downs with any situation. I already know my life and how to manage it. I don't envy other people cause who knows what happens behind closed doors. I've dealt with my demons and bad karma that I have brought on myself and I like where I'm at. And I can proudly say that I've gotten myself here. All the way from being homeless with nothing to having a home and owning my own car. It may not be much, but I can be proud of it.

Homemade Chili, Tuesday's Treat (8/26)

I love a good chili. Over the years I've experimented and come up with what is my favorite chili recipe. Simple and spicy, it goes really well with buttery cornbread and a tall glass of sweet tea.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 15.5 oz can kidney beans
  • 15.5 oz can cannellini beans (drained)
  • 29 oz can tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp crushed basil
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper
Directions

In a large skillet brown ground beef. While ground beef is cooking dice onion and bell pepper.

Combine spices thoroughly in small bowl.

Add browned ground beef, onion, bell pepper, kidney beans w/liquid, drained cannellini beans, almost all of the can of tomato sauce (more of less depending on how thick you want your chili), and spice mixture. Bring to a simmer on medium then turn down to medium-low and cook for 2-3 hours or until onions and peppers are cooked through.

The Promise, Music Monday! 8/25

This installment of Music Monday is coming from my current obsession with 80's pop. "The Promise" by When In Rome off of their self-titled debut album released in 1988.

The Promise

If you need a friend
Don't look to a stranger
You know in the end, I'll always be there
But when you're in doubt
And when you're in danger
Take a look all around, and I'll be there

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
I promise, I promise you I will

When your day is through
And so is your temper
You know what to do
I'm gonna always be there
Sometimes if I shout
It's not what's intended
These words just come out
With no gripe to bear

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
I promise, I promise you I will

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
And if I had to walk the world, I'd make you fall for me
I promise you, I promise you I will

I gotta tell you
Need to tell you
Gotta tell you
I've gotta tell you

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
I promise, I promise you

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
And if I had to walk the world, I'd make you fall for me
I promise you, I promise you I will
I will
I will

Make Your Own Play Dough! (Friday Funday 8/22)

One of my favorite things as a kid was when my mom would make play dough. We didn't have a lot of money so we hardly ever got new toys. My mom was resourceful though, so we always had some sort of entertainment.

Start off with getting the ingredients together:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup salt
  • 2 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • food coloring
Start off by mixing the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.

While stirring, add water and vegetable oil to the dry mix. Add more flour if it is too sticky and more water if it is too dry.

At this stage it needed more water. So I kept adding until I got the right consistency.

Mix in added ingredients. Food coloring, glitter or texture elements may be added at this point. Keep mixing until the everything is evenly distributed.

The best way to add color is to fold and knead. Just keep folding and kneading. Most of the color should stay in the dough and not get on your hands. But if you don't want food coloring on your hands at all I would recommend using gloves.

Play with your play dough!

My daughter Ashlynn showing the finished product!

My 100 Happy Days! (Themeless Thursday)

A few months ago I did a 100 happy days "challenge" on Instagram. Taking a photo every day for 100 days of something that makes me happy really helped me see that my life is pretty good and that I have a lot to be happy for. Here are all 100 photos compiled into one blog post!

And an album of all the images (full resolution).

Karma Can Be a Real B*tch

Years ago I made the mistake of getting re-acquainted with a flame from high school. He complained about his wife, life, etc. I became sympathetic and got a little too involved in his life. He lived a few states away from me so there was no cheating going on. Just a lot of virtual crying on my shoulder. Apparently (according to him), his wife became terrified he was going to leave so she got herself pregnant to keep him. I was flabbergasted. I was still caught up in feeling sorry for him though when I really should not have.

He ended up deploying to Iraq and while there kept up emailing me and even calling me. He told me about a girl he had been checking out and I know from what he said he did more than check her out. I know he did something.

I started to get a little irritated at his attitude. He seemed to be trying to get me and his wife to be friends. He even mentioned a plural marriage! *gag* I wanted him to be honest with his wife. He never could be. So, I started talking to her more and more and started getting the entire story. He was not so innocent as he made himself out to be...

He had set up a file exchange server for us to exchange larger files and I decided to do some digging. To my utter disgust, I found a conversation that seemed to be between him and an underage girl asking for pictures. I couldn't believe it. It made me so sick.

While he was on his way back from deployment I told his wife all the stuff he had been saying and doing. Blew it wide open and left them to deal with each other. His wife finally knew what he had been thinking and he was going to have to face the music. I never tried to recontact them. They had a lot of vitriol towards me. (Understandable given the circumstances).

That was until a couple months ago. I started thinking about his wife and if she was doing okay. She has some health issues and I never had any ill will towards her. I sent a short message just asking how things were and I got a wall of text back from him telling me off. Wow.

Well... I decided to do a little more digging to see how life had been treating them. It is way worse than I could have imagined. Karma has really slapped this guy down hard. And he deserves it. Totally and completely. I feel terrible for his wife and their child though. They've lost everything except each other. I found his blog and he is still living in a dream world.

Seeing all this kind of highlighted to me how much I have grown since just 2006-2008 when I was talking to him. I've moved on with my life, grown emotionally and spiritually, and am where I want to be. Ryan may not be super passionate but he is stable. He is honest and committed. I definitely have a lot more growing to do, but at least I know I'm heading in the right direction.

Life is long. Even the smallest pebble can create ripples that travel for a long time and can have unexpected consequences.

Vow Vox Box!

Summer is wedding season! This month I got a bunch of great freebies from Influenster for weddings in the Vow VoxBox! What is Influenster? Influenster is a community of people like you and me that try out and review products. Reviewing and participating in the program gets you qualified for neat programs like Vox Boxes! (Disclosure: All items were given to me free from Influenster to test and review).

The contents of my VowVoxBox compliments of Influenster

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in 'Barracuda'.
This nail polish is awesome! It dries fast and it lasts even without a top or bottom coat. I only had to use two coats to get a nice, opaque finish. The color, Barracuda, is just gorgeous!

Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream
This is the first moisturizer that has not made my skin feel greasy at all! The scent is also just heavenly. In just a couple weeks I have noticed the overall tone of my skin improving.  I will definitely be buying another jar once I run out!

Riley & Grey
Riley & Grey is a beautifully designed wedding website. Join and build your unique wedding website to get tips, inspiration and stay organized!

Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream
Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream with added aloe and extra moisturizers has helped me get a closer shave and helps keep my legs looking and feeling silky smooth. The raspberry variety that Influenster sent smells wonderful. I can't wait to try one of the other 6 varieties!

EcoTools Pure Complexion Sponge
This little sponge totally surprised me! It is very hard when dry but becomes very soft when wet. I've started using it with my facial cleanser and am quite pleased with the results. It exfoliates without the little granules so its gentle on skin. And with the recent reports of how bad those little exfoliating beads are on the environment, I love this product even more.

Tide to Go
This is a handy little pen to have around! Instantly treat and remove stains while out and about. Its easy to use, has no scent and is really effective on fresh food and drink stains.

Ipsy June Glam Bag!

In case you don't know yet, Ipsy is a subscription service that sends a bag of 4-5 cosmetics every month to you for just $10. Shipping is free! The items included are always worth more than the $10 so its a really good deal. They even have a beauty quiz that you take to personalize your experience. I've been a member since March and I have been very happy each month.

This month's theme was Pretty in Paradise. I got Laneige BB Cushion, Nicka K NewYork Shimmer Eyeliner in blue, Be A Bombshell mascara, NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel, & MarcAnthony Dream Waves Beach Spray all in a collectible makeup bag!

Nadine West Review

Nadine West is a new company that sends you an outfit every month for free! There is absolutely no obligation to buy and no shipping costs. If you like what they send, you keep it and pay for it. Simple as that.

My first outfit was for May. (This post is a little late. Sorry!) I received three items. A top, necklace w/matching earrings, and a set of bracelets.

Item #1 - Ocean Blue Drape Front Top (M) $14.89 (Kept)

I love this top. I have to wear a camisole under it because when I bend forward it shows my entire torso, but the quality, color and fit are great! I am very pleased with this for the price.

Item #2 - Trio Geo Pendant on Bugle
bead necklace w/matching dangle earrings
$29.99 (Returned)
I am not a big fan of matching necklaces and earrings. This also just was too chunky for me.

Item #3 - Set of Multi Diamond Bracelets $9.99 (Returned)
I like bracelets that are softer and tighter fitting. My wrists are slender so its hard for me to wear bracelets like this.

Even though I didn't end up keeping the jewelry, the shirt more than made up for it. I am hoping next month's bag will be better jewelry-wise. And there is nothing to lose. It is absolutely free if you don't end up keeping anything! Overall, I really loved my first Nadine West experience. I definitely recommend signing up for them!
